Ethiopian Calendar System

The Ethiopian calendar has 12 months of exactly 30 days each, plus a 13th month called Pagumē with 5 days (6 in leap years). This system totals 365 days in regular years and 366 in leap years, just like the Gregorian calendar. The 13-month structure makes the calendar more mathematically regular and easier to calculate.

The difference comes from different calculations of Jesus Christ's birth year. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church uses a different chronology that places Christ's birth about 7-8 years later than the Gregorian calculation. This is why Ethiopian year 2017 corresponds to Gregorian 2024-2025.

Ethiopian New Year (called "Enkutatash") falls on September 11th in the Gregorian calendar, or September 12th in Gregorian leap years. This marks the beginning of the month of Mäskäräm, the first month of the Ethiopian calendar year.

The 13 Ethiopian months are:

  1. Mäskäräm (መስከረም)
  2. Ṭəqəmt (ጥቅምት)
  3. Ḫədar (ኅዳር)
  4. Taḫśaś (ታኅሣሥ)
  5. Ṭərr (ጥር)
  6. Yäkatit (የካቲት)
  7. Mägabit (መጋቢት)
  1. Miyazya (ሚያዝያ)
  2. Gənbot (ግንቦት)
  3. Säne (ሰኔ)
  4. Ḥamle (ሐምሌ)
  5. Nähase (ነሓሴ)
  6. Pagumē (ጳጉሜ) - 5/6 days
